Sowing Seeds of Change: A Heartwarming Seedball-Making Day with Unmukt Foundation
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.” On a bright and hopeful morning of June 8, 2025, the MUVI Foundation joined hands with the Unmukt Foundation for an inspiring pre-monsoon initiative—seed ball making, a humble yet powerful step towards reforestation and ecological sustainability.
Our team of 7-8 employees from MUVI arrived around 8:45 AM, eager to embark on this unique and joyful journey. What made the day truly special was the enthusiastic participation of nearly 60 students, ranging from Class 1 to Class 9, all eager to get their hands dirty for a greener planet.
What Are Seedballs?
A seedball is a simple ball made of soil, compost, and seeds of native trees. These compact eco-warriors are a brilliant tool for natural reforestation. Once scattered during the monsoon season, the seeds germinate with ease, turning into strong saplings and eventually into lush, life-giving trees.
At MUVI Foundation, we understand the importance of preparation before planting. That’s why, even though the actual tree plantation is scheduled for August (when the monsoon nourishes the soil), our team and the children came together to prepare over 1,000 seedballs. These included seeds of hardy and climate-suitable trees like banyan, neem, and mango, all of which are vital to Odisha’s ecosystem.
Learning with Laughter and Love
The day wasn’t just about mud and seeds—it was also about learning and bonding. Through storytelling, interactive quizzes, and fun activities, we engaged everyone in conversations about:
- The impact of global warming
- The urgency for a sustainable future
- The power of planting trees to fight climate change
Laughter echoed in the air as kids participated in environment-themed quizzes. Each correct answer sparked cheers, and every question answered wrong became a learning moment. Their curious questions and innocent giggles brought lightness to the hands-on activity and left a lasting impression on our hearts.
A Glimpse of Humanity and Hope
As we sat with the children, forming seedballs with our hands covered in earth, there was a beautiful silence—a shared moment of connection with Mother Nature. It reminded us of the deep bond between humans and the environment, often lost in the humdrum of modern life.
Once the seedball making was wrapped up, millet-based healthy snacks were distributed to all the children, reinforcing our belief in holistic well-being, where nutrition and nature go hand-in-hand.
The most touching moments came after the event when the children, full of curiosity and affection, asked us our names, aims in life, and even our favorite habits. Their warm smiles and heartfelt goodbyes were the most genuine rewards we could have received.
Looking Ahead
With the seedballs ready and monsoon around the corner, we look forward to the tree plantation drive in August with hopeful eyes and committed hearts. Each seedball holds not just a tree, but a promise. A promise to heal the earth, to educate the next generation, and to sow seeds of compassion and responsibility.
We are grateful to Unmukt Foundation for making us part of this meaningful experience and to every child who reminded us what it means to love the planet selflessly.
